  • No opportunity for interviewer to influence respondent's answers.
  • Greater feeling of anonymity
  • Respondents have time to think about their answers.
  • Can include supporting materials, such as illustrations and samples.
  • A broad sample of intended universe can be reached.
  • Can obtain response rates between 50% and 75% with multiple follow-ups.
  • Mail research disadvantages:
  • Potential for errors to occur during data-entry.
  • Respondent may have trouble completing questionnaire if instructions are not clear.
  • Questionnaire may not reach intended recipient.
  • Limited ability to use branching.
